A Message from Dennis Gary Legg

For over 30 years, I have done extensive writing in various non-fiction/business venues. These include products in journalistic, speech, technical, creative and educational writing. That time also included being an award winning educator in the business community.

I have received both an MBA & BBA from Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York as well as two professional designations in the business arena. Also, I have received a number of citations and commendations for my participation in the business community. Most importantly, I am an American writer whose primary language is English.

My solutions to your writing needs are founded in quality and service. My work is based on extensive research delivering a professional product the old fashioned way. If you are looking for quantity, in the box thinking and broad brush, I am not your writer. For products that require your footprint, I write, create and design from your point of view - your thoughts developed to be your final product. Opinion products will be developed from new perspectives and point of view; I do not repackage old ideas. I always meet deadlines with products that will please you.

Title Graphic One Night On The BQE
Posted On 7/23/2010

ONE NIGHT ON THE BQE

The BQE for those of you who are not from the New York City area is the famed Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Not a beautiful road as one might find in North Carolina where beautiful trees and colorful wild flowers separate the two sides of the highway, but rather a road that was generally under construction replete with pot holes, shredded truck tires and whatever dirt and junk you could manage to leave on a roadway. During the day, it was a popular truck route which could be the cause of much of the brokenness and debris on the roadway. It is separated by a cement wall about three feet high. The lanes are relatively narrow and it is elevated for a large part of its expanse. Back in 1971, the three lane roadway reduced to two lanes and made a sharp left turn if you are proceeding west into downtown Brooklyn. This genius of engineering was the site of many an accident, cursing, cutting off and pretty much any dangerous activity one could think of and after all this is Brooklyn. After you complete the death turn you now are joined by the traffic coming from the Brooklyn Tunnel creating a five lane highway where you have a few moments to move to the left two lanes if you want to get off on to the Prospect Expressway. The next five miles is a straight run across south Brooklyn when the highway splits, the left lanes going to the Belt Parkway while the right lanes go on to Bay Ridge and ultimately over the Verrazano Bridge. You are now wondering why I have explained the wonders of one of the ugliest roads in the United States. The reason is that it is the scene of one of the wildest car rides I have ever been on and the night I lost any notion that Brooklyn is safe and the roads going through it are traveled by sane, self controlled individuals; the night I lost my innocence.

In the summer of 1971, I was twenty two years old. I had been driving for five years and thought I was pretty good behind the wheel. I had an above average understanding of distance and could put a car through some mighty tight spaces. As a young driver, I wanted a hot, girl attracting, jet on wheels. The answer to this dream was a 1970 Dodge Charger with a big engine. It was jet black with a black vinyl roof and black interior. When you own a black car you realize that you will never buy one again. You spend half your time keeping it clean. It also attracts heat in the summertime so you live in air conditioning which reduces your gas mileage and cost you more money to operate. Not that a muscle car is the epitome of conservatism but we have to save our pennies where we can to maximize our social life. Having said all that, it comes down to one word, it was “cool”.

Now that you have a complete picture of the road and the car, we add to this a hot summer’s night around midnight and I am tooling down the road at the 45 MPH speed limit indicated on the dirty old signs with my music on, windows up, air conditioning on-life is good. Suddenly, on either side of me appear twin Dodge Chargers in white, probably 1969 vintage. One has a spoiler. Both have engines that are quite a bit larger than mine (I can hear their roar as they pull up). This is not a good situation. Their windows are down which means that air conditioning is not draining power from the engine like mine is. Now panic is the first thing that comes to mind but that is not going to get me out of this situation. Since they have more assets than I do, I have to out smart them. These guys like speed, so let’s do the exact opposite. I cut my speed down to 25 MPH. Instead of just getting tired of me and moving on, they stay exactly where they were, neck and neck. This is going to take a little more shrewdness on my part; I reduce speed to 10 MPH. Guess what; they can go 10 MPH too. This is not a good thing. We are approaching the big left hand turn. I turn off the air conditioning and hit the accelerator. My Charger takes off like a shot. I am half way into the dead man’s turn when I hear a sound behind me like jet engines. Oh this is really not good. I’m on the five lane highway when two streaks, one on each side blaze by me like I am standing still. Well that solves that problem; they’ll be in Bay Ridge in two minutes well away from me.

Wait a minute, what’s this? They’re slowing down and waiting for me. Gee guys, you didn’t really have to wait, it would have been alright for you to go on without me. We are now moving on down the five mile stretch before the road splits doing about 55 MPH, neck and neck. This calls for cool cunning now. Just wish I had some. But then an idea forms in my mind. We’re going to lick these guys because they are not coming home with me! We are about a mile from the split when I punch it again. I’m doing 130 MPH when once again I hear that air shattering roar. Here they come and they are flying. I’m headed for the bridge approach when two missiles blow by me, one on each side.  I hit the breaks hard and pull left to the Belt Parkway. They have long passed the point of changing their direction; their going to Bay Ridge. I slow down and put it into “meander gear” for the rest of the ride home. As the 4 Season’s song goes, “Oh, what a night!”

Title Graphic Wait On The Lord!
Posted On 10/8/2009

Ps 130:5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. NIV

We spend a good part of our lives waiting. Waiting on line; waiting for someone to arrive; waiting for something we have ordered on line to arrive; waiting for loved ones to get ready. Waiting can be frustrating, annoying and generally a nuisance. People who are aware of time management find waiting opposed to their very way of life. But waiting on the Lord is different. Why is that different you say. Because being a child of God is being intimately involved with Him. In that intimacy, we live our life under God’s direction. We live moment by moment walking with Him.

We are not actually waiting. We are walking on the pathway that is of His device and on His time table. We are occupied with the things of the Lord. We are not aware we are waiting because we are doing – doing His work for His people. We are His hands, His mouth, His Jesus to the people we serve. Our path leads to His Son’s return. That is part of the message of Advent. The other part is the celebration of Jesus’ coming over 2000 years ago. In Advent, we once again celebrate and anticipate the Lord’s coming.

Blessed Lord, guide our feet on the pathway of righteousness and help us to see the work of the Kingdom assigned to us. Help us to succeed in the missions you send us on; in our Savior’s precious name. Amen.

Title Graphic Birthdays
Posted On 10/1/2009

Today is my birthday!  I am sure we have all had that realization on one of three hundred and sixty five days that make up a year (yes, 366 on leap years) . I am also certain as we get older that we have mixed emotions about this.  We thank God we made it another year. We wonder where the additional pains have come from although that often indicates that we are alive one more day.  We wonder why certain events happened in this year past and we wonder what our next year holds for us and our love ones – we worry about the bad and hope to God for the good.

But in a more sober moment, we consider that a good number of birthdays have gone by and the  many good things that have happened, not dwelling on the bad. We can then smile to ourselves and say “…thank you God for the year that has past and help and be with me and mine until my next birthday.  And if my next birthday is with you, would you have the heavenly choruses sing Happy Birthday to me?”

Title Graphic Summertime
Posted On 8/17/2009

Summer, for some, is a wonderful time of year. Not for me. I’m a Spring or Fall kind of guy. I hate the heat; I hate the hot sun beating on my head; I hate the humidity; my eyes start to run from allergies I guess; well you get the picture. One thing I will say about summer is that we add two more rooms on to our living space from the late Spring to early Fall time. In the front of the house is a porch which is great to get out of the sun or when it is raining. In the back is a deck which is surrounded by flowers and good smells. We very much like going out there and enjoy an evening cocktail (or two).

I suppose I kind of like the longer days in the summer; I really enjoy wearing short sleeve shirts and no jacket; and I guess going for walks down by the Long Island Sound is not so bad either. Well, now that I think about it, perhaps summer is not so bad after all, but give me a nice Spring any day.

That's what my wife and I just celebrated.  We went to the same hotel, the Garden City Hotel (jewel of Long Island) where we spent our wedding night; however some of the things we did just were not the same.  On our first trip, we used valet parking; this trip we used handicapped parking.  On the first go around we spoke of love and fun; this time we spoke about medical tests and drugs, primarily pain killers.  25 years ago we looked at the dining room in awe; 25 years later we wanted to know how close were the bathrooms.

We speak of living the golden years; the only gold going on here is our constant urinating.  In those years, we had to do something stupid to feel pain; today, getting up is enough.  Lest I sound like I am complaining, I must say that the wisdom gained in these years serve us well.  Friends that we have made in these years are to be cherished.  Memories in these years have been wonderful (if we can only remember them).  Well, all in all, it ain't so bad.  If you are young, I recommend you stay that way.

My mother's favorite statement when life got tough.  Looking through the eyes of scripture, it is saying that when God closes one door He opens another.  In these down times, these are words to hearken to.  For many of us, especially after going through a "downsizing", we find that it is time for a career change.  After all, did not our President say it was a time for change?  I am sure when we were listening to those words on the campaign trail, we were not expecting unemployment, underwater mortgages, and worse.

As our nation moves to the changes in industry, banking, brokerage and all of the many facets of our economy, we must move to changes in our own lives. A new career, a new home, and a smaller car maybe the things that we need to change in our lives. Saving not spending is the language of the day. There are opportunities available to assist us in these changes and we need to take advantage of them.

Faith is a most important component in our lives today. Without faith, we are left to our own devices and if you are like I am, that is a very scary proposition. Seek out what God has in store for you. If you let Him, He will put you where you need to be. After all, could it be worse than where you are now?

Title Graphic Dreaming
Posted On 7/1/2009

What a wonderful state.  Just letting your mind go and see where you end up.  I'm not talking about sleep dreaming, I'm talking about good ol' day dreaming.  Many a fine idea has been developed while you sit in your favorite chair and let your mind waunder.  For me, that chair is a recliner; you know, get your feet up, head back, eyes closed and away you go.  You can soar above the clouds, fly into valleys and canyons, stand before an ocean or put your back against a big old redwood tree and just relax.  Not to much or you'll go from day dreaming to sleep dreaming and those we tend not to remember.   If your as old as I am, the next thing you realize is that you have to go to the bathroom and there goes the dreamin'.  Till next time!
